I’m going into my sophomore year of high school, but when I stopped and thought about those that are going to be freshman, I realized they might like some guidance. So, based on last year, here are a few words to the wise:
1. Be organized going in. I don’t care if it looks dorky. Get that binder, a folder for each class, and a notebook you can count on. Make sure you have pencils, pens, and highlighters. Label it all.
2. Read ahead. Read up on what to expect from your new school. What are the teachers like? What kinds of rules are there? Trust me, you want to know sooner rather than later.
3. Talk to people. Everyone has moments of social awkwardness, but on that first day, do yourself a favor and talk to whoever is sitting next to you. Talk to people in your classes. Talk to anyone and everyone! At least you will learn some names.
4. Don’t be afraid to speak up. Don’t understand something one of your new teachers is saying? Have a question or two about the rules? Voice them. Better at the beginning than finding out you did something wrong a month into school.
5. Go to all the recommended activities. Please, for me. Go to freshman orientation, go to the meetings about clubs and sports, go to the little barbeques, go to whatever else they suggest. You’re doing yourself a disservice if you don’t.
6. Promise to follow through. Make a pact with yourself. Chant if you have to. I will do my homework. I will be organized. I will pay attention. I will study. Start off this year doing things right.
7. Don’t be so scared. Freshman year isn’t that bad, I swear. Every time something goes wrong, take a deep breath. Tell yourself that you will get through it. Because, take it from me, you will.
I hope these tips were helpful! You will get through freshman year either way. Follow these tips, and follow your instincts, and you’ll pass with flying colors. Here’s to freshmen!
