Even if you don’t get a scholarship, you can still make the team without being a walk-on! Ivy League schools don’t even give sports scholarships, yet some of them have excellent sports teams. Other schools, even ones that do give sports scholarships, still give students spots on teams without giving scholarships.
It is very difficult to walk on to a varsity team at a good school, but people do it. Club sports are a great alternative because there is still competition and play against other schools but it’s not as intense and time-consuming. And if you’d rather play just for fun then you can join intramural sports.
If playing sports is a large concern of yours, try checking out some smaller schools! Even if they don’t give "athletic scholarships" technically, they usually try and help out people they want on their sports teams. If you get in contact with the coaches, they can check you out and you can keep in contact with them and they can sometimes help you out! A lot of small liberal arts schools have decent sports teams and with them, academics always comes first, but there are many student athletes. Walking on to these teams can also be easier at times.
