Start searching for scholarships during your junior year in high school. Applications might not be accepted until your senior year. Look at the application requirements to find out if an essay is needed and make sure you meet the deadline for submitting the application.
- Talk with your school guidance counselor
- Search reputable online scholarship sites
- Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA – fafsa.gov) – after January 1st of your senior year
- Check the websites of the colleges or universities where you plan to apply for admission as each institution has their own scholarships
- Be organized about your search for scholarships.
I think it’s great to start looking into options early, talking to counselors, and contacts at colleges. I don’t think you can actually apply for them until you’re a senior and are actually applying to college, though.
