Getting to know your counselor
If you plan to attend college, it’s necessary to apply for scholarship opportunities and other programs that might benefit you. And that’s when it becomes important to become acquainted with your guidance counselor. They are a big help to you and they’re there for a reason. Many of my classmates didn’t even know who their counselor was until this year. It’s necessary to meet them when you’re a freshman because you need to build a rapport with them. Continue reading
The Final Stage
I found out today that I only have 35 days left for school. I’m so ecstatic that I can hardly breathe. I’m finally graduating and I’ll be a COLLEGE freshman this fall. It’s a great feeling knowing that I’ve made the first step to conquering my independence.
I have to run, so I’ll make this post short.
I have some advice: apply for as many scholarships as possible. Don’t hesitate about anything. If there’s an opportunity, take it. Tuition for college is very expensive and every little bit helps.
Final Decisions
I haven’t blogged in quite a long time. I finally came to a decision about my college choice and I’ve selected….Bowling Green State University. It’s about an hour and a half away from Detroit and I think that it’ll be a great fit for me. I visited the school on Feb. 15 for President’s Day since I had a scholarship interview there. I really feel like I belong there, everything is just amazing. I was a little apprehensive about leaving the state, but I am very content with my choice. I’m not really sure how my interview went, but I can only pray for the best. Continue reading
Selecting A College
I’m happy to say that I finally decided upon a college. I’ll be attending Bowling Green State University in the fall. I was accepted to all of the schools I applied to, but BG seemed to be the best fit and I’m very satisfied with my choice of attending an out-of-state school. I feel that it was a lot better than just staying in state. I’ll become more independent and able to live on my own. Now the thing is finding scholarships. It’s a real scavenger hunt, trying to find all of the free money. My holiday break is going to be filled with FAFSA and scholarship apps. Continue reading
On-Site Admissions
So lately, we’ve been having representatives from different colleges come to our school and discuss on-site admissions. Today, Wayne State attended my school and the admissions counselor told us all the perks of applying with them on-site.
On-sites really do take the hassle out of sending all of those applications. With some schools, the application fee is waived and you can get to ask an admissions counselor any question you want directly. With paper and online apps, you might not get all of the answers you want about admissions or anything else you want to personally know.
So Much To Choose.
I don’t know if it’s just me or not. But, everytime I go to the mailbox, I’m bombarded with a million tons of mail from colleges. They all seem so good on paper and when college representatives call they seem so informative and they make me want to attend their schools. I have a list of 10 colleges right now and that’s the condensed one. It seems like everyday I get persuaded to apply to another school because they all have so much to offer and they seem like they fit me.
Being Active and Involved
I know a lot of kids who don’t like to do anything at school. They just go and leave. They don’t feel the need to participate on the school paper or join clubs. But, it’s really important.
Colleges look at what you did in and outside of school too. Joining clubs or playing sports are really important to colleges. It’s important to be active and make colleges notice that you aren’t just a student with good grades and a decent ACT score.
Bad Behavior Isn’t Cool
A lot of students think they can do whatever they want in school. They rack up detention slips and suspensions like they’re trophies. But, I guess they don’t realize that those things can be destructive when applying to college.
Teachers are less prone to give recommendations to students who act up in school. And all college apps ask if you’ve ever been suspended or expelled and why. Colleges don’t want to admit students with behavior troubles. Being disruptive gives you a bad reputation and it doesn’t work in your favor.
Upperclassmen’s Worries
I’ve noticed more and more that upperclassmen are letting out their fears about graduating from HS. I can totally relate to what people are experiencing.
It’s hard growing up and moving on. High school is totally different from college. There are no teachers who’ll coddle you and allow extensions on your work. It’s a whole new ballgame and it’s just something that will take a lot of getting used to. There are no parents around, which makes one accountable for all that they do.
Paying for College
I’m really happy that I’ll be able to attend college soon. But, like most students I’m worried about the cost. I’m happy that I participated in other things and I hope to continue doing so; those things allow students to have a better chance of getting scholarships.
Most people don’t realize it, but you can receive scholarships from almost everywhere. There are scholarships for kids who bowl and a wide array of other criteria that increase the chances for scholarships.
