Comment on What is the most important thing I should think about when choosing what college to go to? by Seth

I think that the most important thing to think about when choosing your college is 'Who Am I' - cliche but true. I would encourage you to consider these questions put together by Marty O'Connell, author of Colleges That Change Lives.

-Why, really, are you going?
-What are your abilities and strengths?
-What are your weaknesses?
-What do you want out of life, or in life - something tangible or intangible?
-Are you socially self-sufficient or do you need warm, familial support?
-What kind of learning community do you want to be part of?

These are just a few to explore with your friends, family, high school counselors - the people who best know you!

The college years should be enjoyable, as should the election process. So get on some campuses and feel them out, ask questions and wander around. You won't know if it fits until you try it on!

In all seriousness, have you spoken with your professor? That's usually a good place to start, as they'll be best equipped to tell you what they want to see.

The most importatnt thing in choosing a college is if it has the program you are interested in. You don't want to waste your time or money on a college just because it has a nice campus and find out that it doesn't offer the program you are interested in.

Start searching for scholarships during your junior year in high school. Applications might not be accepted until your senior year. Look at the application requirements to find out if an essay is needed and make sure you meet the deadline for submitting the application.
- Talk with your school guidance counselor
- Search reputable online scholarship sites
- Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA - fafsa.gov) - after January 1st of your senior year
- Check the websites of the colleges or universities where you plan to apply for admission as each institution has their own scholarships
- Be organized about your search for scholarships.

Although I'm only in the tenth grade, I really think your blog helped me to understand how important scholarships are. I also appreciate that you gave websites were I could find out about different scholarship opportunities.

Instead of looking at the economy as a mere chain-reaction of events, consider an economy-web of sorts.
For example, I bike 7 miles to campus each day instead of taking the bus or driving. On the one hand, that choice is bad for the CATA bus because they are not getting my money, which may hurt them. Also, I am not paying for gas or harming the environment. This could be seen as bad for the economy.
However, my bike was made in the USA, I buy my wheels ($90 each) and tires ($60-$75) from a place in Maine, my jerseys ($55 each), gloves ($15), helmet, and other special clothes all come from local bike shops. By supporting those businesses I am helping them to hire more people, ship more product, and buy more products.
So, my point is, without dragging on, consider what else the money is being spent on.

In terms of Human Services; although it is a field that is aimed at helping people, a good example of a job in the field of human services it to look to the Department of Human Services.
These include jobs such as; social workers, foster care workers, Child Protective Services workers, people that give out food stamps.
Basically, someone who wants to work in the field of Human Services will be working with the people of this society that need a specific service.

Hope that helps!

You should think about first is what you want out of a college. What expetions you have for the campus and classes. Second, you should think about career choices up your field. Third, think about what kind of campus life you would like to have. Do you enjoy being around alot of people or would like a small capus life. Last but not least, choose which college is affordble for you.
