College students from Michigan colleges and universities tell high school students what to expect in the years ahead.
1 day til the It’s MI Life Conference
It’s just one day til the It’s MI Life Conference in Dearborn. If you haven’t signed up and still want to come, just send me a message and we can get you the forms to fill out. Lots of great prizes, great workshops and a chance to meet at least 10 college students or soon-to-be college students. Here’s a video, created by MSU journalism major Katie Masters, featuring some current college students with their advice to high school students and incoming college freshmen.
Directions to the conference
The conference takes place at the Fairlane Center South Building at 19000 Hubbard Drive, just east of campus. When you enter the building, there will be signs directing you to Room 194 and the adjacent rooms. There will be a continental breakfast in Dining Room C during sign-in from 8:45 to 9:15 a.m. Please do not arrive later than 9:15 unless you have made arrangements to do so.

Life after high school: The concept can be exciting and scary at the same time.
Compromising for the Sake of Sanity
As an impulsive person, it’s hard to make a decision or come to a general consensus of what to do. The biggest decision of my life so far came when May 1 rolled around. For those who don’t know, May 1 is the day when high school seniors make their final decision regarding what college to go to. It was a pretty big deal for me; I was torn between 3 schools for a while and then it came to the final 2. I had plans to leave the state, but little did I know, when you leave the state the costs are super inflated. However, if I stayed in Michigan, then I would be paying much less. Continue reading
AP, Decision Day & more
Taking AP courses are challenging. However, taking them really helps you. It prepares you to work at a college-level of intensity and determine if you are able to handle the rigor of the assigned work. Even if you take one AP course, it will help you tremendously.
The Perils of Decision Making
I thought I actually knew where I wanted to go to college. It’s practically May and I have to make the final decision. Of course, I thought I would attend Bowling Green, but then I think about the what ifs. Sure, BG is a good school, but when you’re looking to rack up loans totaling 15,000 in your freshman year, things look differently. It’s extremely hard to make a decision when college is involved. I told people that they should always pick the college that’s best for them or they’ll regret their decision. It’s weird how I can never take my own advice. Continue reading
Colleges want students who want them
Most schools ask you to respond to some variation of the question "Why do you want to go to school here?" in the application.
The key to success when you answer this question is to be as specific as possible – show the admissions counselor reading your application that you’re not applying just for the heck of it.
What about the campus and the academic programs excites you? What campus groups exist that you’d like to be a part of? How does it match your passions and your personality?
Scholarships & Essays
Getting into college is the easy part; the real work comes in when you’re looking for free money. There are tons of scholarship opportunities out there, but you really have to look for them. Scholarships are pretty easy to find, but they require a lot of work. It takes a lot of patience to search for all the opportunities that are out there. It’s best to have a folder or binder solely dedicated to scholarships and a planner that keeps track of all the scholarship deadlines you find.
